Principles That Do Not Promote E-Learning

Multimedia principle

Words allow us to communicate. To show how a bicycle pump works without words does not promote learning. A picture without words does not promote learning. Graphic should be supported by text, and vice versa. This way, it enhances and supports effective learning. Graphics that decorate the page and graphics without words does not promote learning.Let’s take a look at this graphic:

By itself, it is not giving any information to the learner. Using text to explain the graphic, the learner will understand and learn from the image.

Contiguity principle
Text should be placed near the corresponding graphic. Not doing this will bring confusion to the learner, and the learning will not be effective. Imagine if the graphic and the text are presented this way to an ESL learner:

Most probably the ESL student will not be able to identify which is the door, and which is the window. Here we see the importance of the proper placement of the text in relation to the graphic.

Key Concepts that are not taught does not promote learning. Key concepts needs to be taught. As we have seen on the examples above, they key concepts are not being well taught, avoiding the learner to acquire the expected knowledge. Using properly the e-learning principles, not only key concepts will be learned, but also skills will be developed. Both the knowledge and the skills will be applied to work and learning environments by the learner in the future.
